It's the little touches

Though design and location are important for any establishment, a great menu is the staple of all great restaurants. That said, you want to create an atmosphere that will draw customers in and compliment your unique menu.

Sometimes, the little touches can make the biggest difference. While decor and interior design are the most noticeable aspects, relying solely on that is like relying only on a home run hitter to score points in a baseball game. Sure he might score two or three points a game, but without all the other batters getting on base, it won't be enough to win.

Without those extra touches, the whole decor of a restaurant will seem phony, so it's important to follow through in all areas of decoration. Bringing a bottle of wine to a table is one way to enhance a meal, but leaving it sitting in the corner of the table can ruin the appeal by placing a tall clunky object in the way of food and intentional decorations. A wine bucket stand on the other hand can allow you to keep the bottle from being in the way, while adding another layer of style to the presentation of the drink.

Kabobs are an enjoyable, and often very tasty dish, and part of the fun is taking them off the skewer. Still presenting kabobs on thin, cheaply made wooden skewers may have the effect of ruining the presentation of the food. Alternatively, removing the items from the skewers in the kitchen takes away an interactive part of the meal. Investing in quality metal skewers will help retain the fun of eating kabobs without cheapening the look.

There are dozens of other small touches that can make a great restaurant. Keeping quality metal gravy boats on the table allow diners to pour the finishing touches on their dishes while adding a bit of class. Silver serving trays, though perhaps a bit cliche, can be fun. A butter melter on every table in a seafood restaurant keeps butter ready for dipping throughout the whole meal. In the end, the attention to detail may matter more than the intended style of your establishment.
